Shiftless. Many users ignore the high and low gears on a drill/driver: Running in high makes the work go faster but can burn up the motor, while low gear protects the tool but feels too slow. Ridgid's answer is the R86014 AutoShift drill/driver. Its transmission starts and stays in high speed until a sufficient load kicks it down into low gear, allowing users to go as fast as the tool can handle without stopping to shift. (The tool also has a shift override that keeps it in high gear.) The R86014 comes in a $229 kit with two different-size lithium-ion batteries. Ridgid, 800/474-3443. www.ridgid.com
