Standard pencils are fine for most layout tasks, but some materials are difficult to mark. Sola, a company best known for its levels, also makes a line of specialty pencils. Its KB 24 wet-dry pencil can be used to mark tile and wet lumber, and its STB 30 to mark masonry and stone. At 9-1/2 inches, the pencils are 35 percent longer than normal pencils, and they're more durable – says the maker – because they're made from basswood rather than pine.
