Earlier this year Crescent introduced and unusual combination tool, the X6 Pass-Thru Adjustable Wrench. The set consist of an 8-inch wrench, 10 sockets, and a plastic storage tray. One end of the wrench is an adjustable jaw that opens to 1 1/8 inches. The lower jaw can be removed and reversed to turn the tool into a 1-inch adjustable pipe wrench—with a serrated face providing gripping power. The other end of the wrench is a pass-through socket holder, that allows you to use shallow pass-through sockets for tasks that normally require deep sockets or that even deep sockets can’t do (manufacturer’s video below).
The sockets are designed to fit both SAE and metric fasteners and work with six fastener types: hex, square, 12pt, E-torx, partially rounded hex, and spline. The smallest socket is 3/8” (10mm) and the largest 3/4” (19mm).
In general, it’s better to keep both metric and SAE sockets on hand because they fit better than combination sockets. And do-it-all tools are rarely the equal of ones designed to perform a single task. That said, the small size of the set and the sockets’ ability to be used with metric and SAE might make it useful as an inexpensive emergency set or a set to bring when there isn’t space to carry a full complement of mechanics tools.
