Mar. 11--NORFOLK -- The City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday to sell 14.7 acres around a Norfolk reservoir in Virginia Beach to the city of Virginia Beach for $2.86 million.
The land surrounds part of Lake Lawson near Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. The purchase is part of Virginia Beach's open space program. The property is part of 40 acres of waterfront land to be known as the Lake Lawson and Lake Smith Natural Area, Beach officials say.
Norfolk officials say the agreement provides a buffer around the lake edge to protect the reservoir from encroachment and provides the city permanent access to the lake, which along with Lake Smith is part of the city's reservoir system. The sale could help Norfolk City Manager Regina V.K. Williams close a projected $10 million deficit.
