GreenSpot, a tool, hardware, lumber, and building supplies dealer in Carbondale and Glenwood Springs, Colo., wants to be all green to all builders.

Everything this store--recently founded by Snowmass, Colo. resident Christopher Jacobsen--stocks and sells is certified to be sustainable, recycled, recyclable, or locally sourced.

"We evaluate every product that comes in our door," says manager Evan Menzel. "We're always on the lookout for new green building supplies and materials."

The store carries only lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council; paints, stains, and glues low in VOCs; and building products like Maze nails made from recycled materials. Even the carpenter's pencils sold at GreenSpot are made with FSC-certified wood.

"We haven't found a lot of green options" in tools because manufacturers are not yet making them, says Menzel, but "if it's not green, it has to be high quality, which implies sustainability; and we try to buy American wherever possible to cut down on transportation fuel costs."

Store personnel research energy-conscious manufacturers and encourage buyers to bring sustainable tools and building products to their attention.

"We want builders to consider us the 'Whole Foods' of this industry," Menzel adds.
