Our winner has the commercial appeal and performance of a true workhorse – one that doesn't like to stay in the stable. Click Here for more.
Controls: The variable-speed TEFC motor and electronic controls keep the pump's deadband to a minimum, and the digital pressure gauge and easy-to-spot dial give the user an extra measure of control.
Features: The extra-large vertical pump filter is easy to clean without making a mess, but being mounted like an aftermarket accessory makes it more vulnerable than others.
•The suction tube filter screen will not fit through a bucket lid hole; it must be unscrewed.
•The stiff plastic prime tube is set too low, so it kinks when directed into a waste bucket.
•The prime/pump valve is less protected than we'd like.
Gun: The included 009 gun rated very good for quality and has a comfortable four-finger trigger, but its narrow guard can collect paint that drips into the spray.
Cart: The 34-inch fixed-height extra-sturdy cart is fabricated from oversized tubing and has the only pneumatic tires for the smoothest ride, even up stairs.
Extras: Besides having the only pressure gauge, this unit also has the only user-accessible fuse for extra motor protection.

Our middle-ranked fifth-place tool is a solid basic sprayer and was considered by our tester to be the handyman's pick for less-frequent use. A good gun, a good filter, and good performance all at a good price.
Features: The vertical pump filter is easy to clean without making a mess, and its close-in design is protected from wear.
•The suction tube filter screen will fit through a bucket lid hole without being unscrewed.
•The prime tube is stiff plastic, but it's long enough to reach a waste bucket without kinking.
•The prime/pump valve is well protected on the filter housing.
Gun: The included gun rated good for quality and its wide guard doesn't collect paint that drips into the spray. However, we didn't like the two-finger trigger with the ridge behind it, which creates a pinch point.
Cart: The sturdy sliding-handle cart has a nice top hose hook, and is just the same as the 390's.
Extras: The storage caddy hidden beneath the motor housing frame is handy for storing spare tips and oil away from overspray, but it won't quite fit an assembled spray gun.
Note: Similar Magnum and LTS versions of this tool from the big-box stores do not have the same quality of components.

In fourth place, this tool is worthy enough to rank as a professional painter's rig but lacks the bells and whistles of more advanced pump controls.
Controls: From fourth place on down, all the tools have single-speed motors with simpler mechanical controls.
Features: Large vertical pump filter is easy to clean without making a mess, and its close-in design is protected from wear.
•The suction tube filter screen will fit through a bucket lid hole without being unscrewed.
•The prime tube is stiff plastic, but it's long enough to reach a waste bucket without kinking.
•The prime/pump valve is well protected on the filter housing.
Gun: The included FTx gun rated very good for quality and has a comfortable four-finger trigger. It comes with a Graco-exclusive RAC X tip and housing, but we swapped them out to test it with our painter's favored industry-standard tips.
Cart: The sturdy sliding-handle cart has a nice top hose hook, and is just the same as the 190's.
Note: Also sold as the Nova 390 at Sherwin-Williams stores.
Similarly rated 210 ES model available outside of professional channels does not have the same quality of components.

In second place, this premium tool is at the edge of the step up to the brand's commercial big boys with much more expensive components and feature sets.
Controls: The variable-speed TEFC motor and electronic controls keep the pump's deadband to a minimum. The pointer on the control dial shows its setting at a glance.
Features: Large vertical pump filter is easy to clean without making a mess, and its close-in design is protected from wear.
•The suction tube filter screen will fit through a bucket lid hole without being unscrewed.
•The prime tube is a sturdy rubber hose attached to a metal tube. It stays where you put it and is the easiest to work with.
• The prime/pump valve is well protected on the filter housing.
Gun: The included Contractor gun rated very good for quality and ergonomics, but it came as a two-finger trigger version instead of the preferred four-finger. The gun comes with a Graco-exclusive RAC X tip and housing, but we swapped them out to test it with our painter's favored industry-standard tips.
Cart: The sturdy sliding-handle cart is the only one with both top and bottom hose hooks.
Note: Also sold as the Ultimate Nova 395 at Sherwin-Williams stores.

This low-cost unit is probably best suited for lighter duty rather than as a full-time job-site airless sprayer.
Features: No pump filter.
•The suction tube filter screen fits through a bucket lid hole without being unscrewed, but the flexible hose tends to tip over one-gallon cans.
•The long vinyl prime tube reaches a waste bucket easily.
•The only single-stroke pump in the test; caused noticeable pulsation in pressure delivery.
Gun: The combination airless/ air-assisted gun rated poor for airless spraying. It has a two-
finger trigger, a plastic locking latch, and a narrow guard that builds up paint that drips into the spray. It requires wrenches to access the (tiny) gun filter, and lacks a swivel to keep the hose from twisting the gun in your hand.
Cart: The extra-tall cart handle folds in half to save space. Portability could be improved if the company designed the handle for lifting and switched from hard rubber tires.
Extras: The only tool in the category with an HVLP spray function and components for fine finishing.

Ranked solidly in the midtier at sixth place, this tool is a capable performer edged out of a higher rank by a few less-preferred features.
Features: The small horizontal pump filter mounted below the motor housing is hard to reach, requires a wrench to remove, and is difficult to open without making a mess.
•The suction tube filter screen will not fit through a bucket lid hole; it must be unscrewed.
•The thick rubber prime tube reaches a waste bucket easily.
•The prime/pump valve is less protected than we'd like.
•The protruding chute for the pump packing oil is overly exposed to overspray, debris, and liquid contaminants.
Gun: The included G-10XL gun rated good for quality and has a wide guard that doesn't collect paint that drips into the spray, but it came as a two-finger trigger version instead of the preferred four-finger.
Cart: The odd fixed-height cart has a nice hose hook on top, but at 38 inches tall, it's hard to fit in a truck with a topper.
Extras: Has a thermal reset switch for extra motor protection. A cord wrap on the back of the stand lets you manage the thick cord easily.
Note: The Advantage series is the former Spraytech line.

Our third-place tool definitely has the juice for everyday use, and its great performance and features make it a commonly used pump among the pros.
Controls: The pump is built with a single-speed motor, but electronic controls keep its deadband smaller. A color- coded light by the pressure dial indicates the approximate psi range, and a special setting on the dial pulses the pump for enhanced cleaning.
Features: The large horizontal pump filter is well-protected below the motor housing, but its position makes it tough to open without making a mess.
•The suction tube filter screen will not fit through a bucket lid hole; it must be unscrewed.
•The thick rubber prime tube kinks slightly when directed into a waste bucket.
•The prime/pump valve is well protected by the unit's frame.
•Has a plunge lever to release a stuck ball in the inlet valve.
•Has an auto-oiler with oil reservoir and injector button to easily lube pump packing.
Gun: The included LX80II gun is the test favorite, with a four-finger trigger for comfort and a wide guard that stays clean.
Cart: Our favorite cart. With a sliding handle, the sturdiest legs, a hose hook on top, cord hook below, and flat-free tires.

In seventh place, this tool crosses the line into the lower-tier budget category suited for less-frequent use. It can put on a competent coat of paint, but with compromises built into the lower price tag,
Features: No pump filter.
•The suction tube filter screen will not fit through a bucket lid hole; it must be unscrewed.
•The suction tube can't be threaded in tightly without plastic threads on the other side of the fitting popping loose. Such flimsy components are annoying and cast a bit of doubt on the entire unit.
•The vinyl prime tube doesn't kink but should be longer to reach into the waste bucket.
•Prime/pump valve protected.
•Has a plunge lever to release a stuck ball in the inlet valve.
Gun: The included LX60 gun rated fair. It has a decent four-finger trigger, but the narrow guard builds up paint that drips into the spray.
Cart: The cart collapses flat for storage - but it's so wobbly in use, it always feels on the verge of collapse.
Note: In 2011, this model will be renamed the Advantage 350 and will include the brand's auto-oiler feature. A similar version with a Wagner cart is sold as the Wagner Twin Stroke 9195.

As the price indicates, our eighth-place finisher is $100 less of a tool than the next-highest rated. It too can paint well enough, but with even more compromises. How low should you go? It depends on how much painting you'll do.
Features: Shares the same exact feature notes with the similar Titan XT 420 tool next door, including the dubious suction-tube problem that could cause some concern for the discriminating pro. But one great feature it shares with the company's top-end Titan is the auto-oiler.
Gun: The included GX-07 gun rated poor. It has a two-finger trigger, a plastic locking latch, and a narrow guard that collects paint that drips into the spray. It requires wrenches to access the gun filter, and it lacks a swivel to keep the hose from twisting the gun in your hand dangerously.
Cart: This sliding-handle cart is the tippiest in the test due to the hard rubber wheels being set so close together.
Extras: Large storage caddy is handy for storing spare tips, oil, and even the gun. The cord wrap on the caddy lets you manage the cord easily.
Note: A similar version with the folding Titan cart design is sold as the Titan XT 330.
