The advancement of battery and brushless motor technology is bringing more and more tools into the fold as viable cordless solutions. Ridgid has several new and recently released cordless options, including a compressor, a torpedo heater, and a compact router. We’ll be testing each of these out over the next several months. For now, here’s a quick look at the features of each.
Model R0230 Cordless Compressor
It’s not a compressor for running big trim jobs, and it isn’t meant to be. The new brushless, cordless 18V compressor from Ridgid does offer portability and convenience, though, if you’re a remodeling contractor or trim carpenter working in a single room or on a small job. With a max pressure of 120PSI and air delivery at 0.9 SCFM @90PSI, the compressor is reported to be plenty powerful to drive headless pins and brads, and even some heavier gauge finish nails depending upon your tool’s particular SCFM needs. The unit can run off of either one or two Ridgid 18V batteries. According to the manufacturer, you’ll get 1,200 brads out of two 5-Ah batteries (though length of brads and material type for those specs are unclear as of this writing). The compressor puts off 77 dBA, so it’s relatively quiet. It has all of the typical features you’d expect from a small trim compressor: locking regular knob, 1-gallon tank, hose wrap, and ¼-inch ball valve tank drain. It comes with a 3-year warranty. It’s expected to launch this month and will sell for $199 (bare tool only).
R860424B Cordless Hybrid Propane Forced Air Propane Heater
The new brushless forced-air propane heater runs on either one 18V battery or on a regular extension cord. It has a variable-power dial that allows you to adjust between 30,000 and 60,000 Btu. According to the manufacturer, the heater will run for up to 12 hours on low heat or 7 hours on high when equipped with a 5-Ah Hyper Lithium Battery. It uses .30 gallons per hour and will heat up to 1,350 square feet. The unit is UL certified, has overheat protection and an electric ignition switch, and comes with a 3-year limited warranty. It will be available in March of this year and will sell for $129 (bare tool only).
R86044B Cordless Compact Router
Released last October, the GEN5X Brushless 18V compact router weighs 2.4 pounds when equipped with a 5-Ah battery and has a ¼-inch collet. According to Ridgid you can trim up to 400 feet of laminate on a full 5-Ah battery. It’s variable speed (17,000-25,000), has a micro-adjust dial for fine-tuning the bit height, and has Ridgid’s SoftStart Technology. A dust ejection port directs dust out of the line of sight and a LED light helps improve visibility. It sells for $119 (bare tool only).
