Bosch recently unveiled a new cordless jigsaw that will be the second 12V max model with something other than a top-handle design. Milwaukee introduced one several years back, an unusual hybrid with elements of top handle (it has a VS trigger) and barrel grip models. Bosch’s new saw is pure barrel grip—which for me is a plus because I’m a fan of that configuration. I like the ergonomics and control that come from grabbing the motor instead of the handle. According to Bosch, the barrel grip configuration makes it easier to cut overhead or from the underside of the work piece.
I haven’t used this saw but was able to handle one at The World of Concrete. The tool is extremely light, weighing only 3.3 pounds with a 2.0 Ah battery. And it’s amazingly compact—only 6.75 inches tall and 9.4 inches long.
Features include a one-handed keyless blade clamp, orbital cutting action, and an LED light. The tool has variable speed and a built-in battery gauge, and comes with a non-marring plastic cover for the shoe.
There are a few minor things I don’t like about the design. It would have been nice to have keyless bevel adjustment and a blower, though I can see why Bosch omitted those features, as they would have increased the size and cost of the tool. The switch is located on the left side of the barrel, within easy reach of a right-hander’s thumb. I’m left-handed and this is a poor location for me; I’d prefer it to be on the top or bottom of the tool. As before, I understand the manufacturer's reasoning: There are more righties in the population than lefties.
A version of this tool has been out in Europe since 2013; I’m glad it’s finally coming here. It’ll be a handy addition to the kits of tradesmen who use Bosch’s 12V max system and it seems fitting that the company best known for jigsaws have a jigsaw in the 12V max category—a category it invented.
