Ninth place in cuts per charge test, seventh in power test, unable to complete high-demand test. A mild performer, this saw would be best for light-duty cutting. This saw is large and heavy for an 18-volt tool and felt awkward, with a trigger handle that was too fat for comfort. A standout feature is the rafter hook. This was the only nicad battery tool in the test. Kit contains only one battery.

Sixth place in cuts per charge test, eighth in power test, unable to complete high-demand test. This tool is suited for a lighter-duty trim and siding work as it stalled out frequently when under much of a load. It tied for lightest weight, and was one of the most comfortable saws with nice balance and a great grip. Its cut-line light is a handy feature. A flexible fuel model, so it can use older nicad and NiMH batteries. Only available in a multitool combo kit.

Fifth place in cuts per charge test, fifth in power test, sixth in high-demand test. The best small saw in the test, with surprising power and runtime for an 18-volt tool–it powered through the tough stuff with ease. This saw tied for lightest weight, and had superb balance and the best-feeling grip. The cut-line light and blower and extra calibration settings are all advanced features that set this saw apart. Kit contains two batteries.

Tied for last (10th) place in cuts per charge test, 10th in power test, seventh in high-demand test. This tool was generally a low-performing unit, but showed surprising backup power in the high-load test. The saw is heavy and bulky for an 18-volt tool, and its forward-tilted trigger handle design made it uncomfortable to use. The battery fuel gauge is appreciated, and its unique vacuum attachment port might be helpful for some indoor cutting. This tool has flexible fuel capabilities for both nicad and NiMH batteries. Kit contains two batteries.

Eighth place in cuts per charge test, ninth in power test, eighth in high-demand test. This saw performed on the lower end of the tests and was just barely able to complete the high-load test. This tool was not a comfort standout, and some of its features appeared lighter-duty than most. The metric-blade-only arbor on the saw made it difficult to find a replacement blade–a really big issue. This tool was the only NiMH-powered saw tested, and the saw comes with a giant combo kit case when ordered alone. Kit contains only one battery.

Tied for last (10th) place in cuts per charge test, last (11th) in power test, unable to complete high-demand test. This saw was outclassed by every other saw in the test and is not suitable for professional jobsite use. It stalled out constantly, because its large blade requires more torque than its 20-volt motor can supply; this often required a manual resetting of its battery overload switch. The cut-line light and battery fuel gauge are nice features, but the saw could do without the laser. Kit contains two batteries.

Fourth place in cuts per charge test, sixth in power test, fifth in high-demand test. This is a good all-around framing and trim saw with decent power, but it stalls out a bit easier than most. The balance and feel were notably good, and it was the only saw of its size and shape with a blade-right design. The battery fuel gauge is appreciated, but the lack of a blade brake is really noticeable for a pro-level tool. The saw is not sold in kit form, and although it can take 18- or 24-volt batteries, the 24-volt batteries and charger can be difficult to find.

Third place in cuts per charge test, fourth in power test, fourth in high-demand test. This is a great saw that does everything very well, and it's just behind the winner as an all-around framing and trim saw. This tool was almost impossible to stall out–cutting powerfully without binding–and has a very fast blade brake. It was among the best in balance and comfort. The battery fuel gauge is useful. Kit contains two batteries.

Second place in cuts per charge test, third in power test, first in high-demand test. This is the best of the test, a great all-around tool that met all of our needs for framing and trim work. With unstoppable power, this saw never stalled out and even performed better when under the highest loads. This tool also has the top-rated balance and feel of a winner, and great features such as its rafter hook and battery fuel gauge. The saw can use a smaller 36-volt battery pack, which makes for less runtime but also for less weight. Kit contains only one battery.

This saw had an interesting mix of high-performance results and frustrating user experience. Even though it could cut super fast, its 7 1/4-inch blade didn't leave much reserve torque, the saw stalled fairly easily at times, and the battery had a short life. The tool was uncomfortable to use, especially with its hard edges around the trigger. The tool-less blade change was clumsy, and the blade even came loose during normal use. Kit contains only one battery.

This is high-performance framing saw that could replace a corded saw on the jobsite for most uses. Its runtime was the longest, cutting all day on two charged batteries. Built like a corded saw with a blade-right design and a 7 1/4-inch blade, it was bigger and heavier than the others but could stall if pushed hard. The weight was the biggest drawback, and the saw was difficult to use with one hand. The battery fuel gauge was nice, and the rip fence was the best. Kit contains only one battery.
