Billy Boxes is a company in Austin, Texas that makes aluminum saddle boxes for full-size pickups. Each Billy Box is made-to-order from 12-gauge aluminum instead of the 14-gauge and thinner material used by competitors that mass-produce boxes. Seams receive continuous welds and are ground smooth prior to the application of the powder coat finish of the purchaser’s choice; there are 25 colors to choose from.
Designed to be simple and sturdy, the stainless steel lock mechanism is accessed from a recess on the driver’s side of the box. It’s secured with a padlock and relies on a heavy tube to engage with both sides of the lid. The lid is supported with automotive gas springs and is sealed with automotive gaskets. Four J-bolts are used to hold the box in place so it can be installed without drilling the bed of the truck.
A series of cinch straps on the underside of the lid allow the owner to store long items—such as levels—in an area that normally goes to waste. The inside of the box has multiple T-tracks to which accessories such as divider panels (to subdivide the space) can be attached. For the sportsman, accessories (the V-Grip System) are available to hold firearms and fishing gear. There’s a full-length rubber matt on the bottom of the box to keep the contents from sliding around.
Optional equipment includes exterior D-ring tie-downs, built-in LED lighting, and an audio system that consists of speaker, a USB charger, and audio jack. The lighting and audio can be powered by a removable battery pack or a hardwired connection to the vehicle battery.
Delivery time is 4-6 weeks depending on how far the box has to be shipped. As company owner Levi Smith puts it in one of the videos posted on his website, the box isn’t made for the truck; it’s made for you. This is a very new company, having opened for business in the spring of 2015.
